1. Schools of Tomorrow: Designs for 21st Century Teaching and Learning
Rapid advances in technology, the changing face of our global economy, and current research in successful school reform initiatives have all converged to suggest a set of 21st century skills that students must learn and practice in addition to the traditional 3 R's. This workshop explores what 21st century skill building looks like in practice, and how it informs the design of school programs and facilities that not only meet the needs of today's students and teachers, but will adapt and evolve as those needs continue to change. 2. Getting Focused: Academic Vision and Guiding Principles for Design
This workshop guides participants through a process of clarifying their school's core programmatic, academic, and learning goals, and creating a set of guiding design principles to embody them. Guiding design principles serve as an essential roadmap and reference point, which can inform decisions and set priorities during all phases of design. Activities and topics include:

3. Inspired Architectural Visioning and Programming
In this highly interactive and hands-on workshop, participants are given free rein to brainstorm, detail, diagram, and develop their ideas for the key characteristics, spaces, adjacencies, and building details they feel will make their school come alive. This workshop is the precursor to creating a preliminary architectural program, or listing of spaces, square footage, and adjacencies. Sometimes our most outrageous ideas are those that inspire practical yet imaginative solutions. Activities and topics include:

4. Conceptual Design: Thinking Outside of the Box
This hands-on workshop explores the relationship between guiding design principles, architectural program, and building site by engaging participants in conceptual design activities at both the macro and micro levels. Collaborative teams of 3-4 people create a range of evocative design schemes and diagrams for the building site, building layout, classrooms, gathering areas, and any other key spaces. Activities and topics include:

5. Schematic Design: Staying True to Your Vision
The schematic design phase further refines and details one or two of the most promising conceptual design solutions to create the base plan from which the final building design will be developed. At this critical juncture, where vision meets the realities of limited square footage and budget, it is important to identify and preserve those elements of design that are essential to realizing the project's guiding design principles. This workshop guides participants through a review and analysis of guiding design principles and suggested design schemes.

6. Designing for STEM and Inquiry-Based Learning
With a severe shortage of qualified STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) workers and only 17% of graduating high school seniors prepared and/or choosing to major in STEM fields at the college level, federal and local grant opportunities have sought to dramatically increase the development of STEM programs nationwide. This workshop looks at the spatial needs of STEM-focused and inquiry-based schools, where changing technology and teaching practices suggest new ways of looking at laboratory science. 7. Getting Personal: Building Community in Schools Large and Small
Research cites the many advantages of smaller learning communities in which students are known well. Benefits include increased attendance, graduation rates, grade-point averages, and student, teacher, and family satisfaction. This workshop explores the ways in which large schools can "get smaller" and small schools can get smarter by creating teaching neighborhoods, small school "orbits," and branded/graphic identities that build ownership and maximize the use of space.

8. Buildings that Teach: Learning through Design
This workshop explores the practice of designing transparent, interactive, and sustainable buildings that make teaching and learning visible and engage students in an ongoing process of monitoring and learning about building systems and energy usage. Activities and topics include:
